City Rail Link (CRL) is an ambitious transport project underway in central Auckland. Billed as the largest transport infrastructure project in New Zealand, the project is delivering 3.45km-long dual railway tunnels deep below the city, designed to double the number of people within a 30-minute commute of central Auckland - the nation's biggest employment hub.

However, progress cannot occur without disruption, and this disruption has required careful planning and many hands to ensure the city of Auckland can continue to operate during construction. 

This is where Ventia first entered the scene. Whilst our Electricity & Gas business was delivering specialist electrical work on Waitematā (Britomart) station as part of this project, they coordinated with Ventia's Telecommunications business to share with their client the power of Ventia and our breadth of capability.

With much of the CRL works taking place deep below the ground, closer to the surface there's also plenty of action.

Ventia's Telecommunications experts were engaged to assist with keeping businesses and residents connected to the internet while the projects rumbled on.

This involved our telecommunication technicians diligently digging, drilling and splicing to re-route the fibre network and move and replace older copper cable - much of which has been in the ground since 1944. The work was critical to ensure the city's underground telecommunications network remained intact during the works and so that it could function once the new rail link goes through.

Ventia brings significant experience in urban telecommunications projects, including those requiring traffic and pedestrian management in major centres. 

We are also fortunate to be able to call on a network of specialised subcontractor partners, including SUS Ltd - a 100% Māori owned business that brought its expertise to bear in support of the City Rail Link project.
