Our energy networks and renewables team will support client Lightsource bp with the delivery of grid connection assets including two high voltage substations for the landmark Kōwhai Park solar farm project.

The Kōwhai Park solar farm is adjacent to Christchurch Airport and will connect into Orion’s electricity distribution network as well as supporting the future electrification and decarbonisation goals of the airport.

The project is being delivered by Lightsource bp and its joint-venture partner, Contact Energy.

Construction is set to begin in late 2024 and the project is expected to be completed in 2026.

Executive General Manager Energy, Water and Renewables Agathe Gross said that the local team is excited to be partnering on such a significant project.

Our commitment to supporting the energy transition through electrification and decarbonisation is realised through applying our long-term expertise to projects that will help change where we source our energy.

“It’s exciting to be working with Lightsource bp and alongside Contact and Christchurch Airport in helping them to deliver this project”

Kōwhai Park is expected to be one of New Zealand’s largest solar farms with around 300,000 solar panels and will be able to generate enough electricity for the equivalent demand of approximately 36,000 homes. It is also the first phase of Christchurch Airport’s renewable energy precinct.
