Replacing 14,000 high-pressure sodium streetlights with a full network of LEDs takes a lot of planning.
Before the first LED light is installed, a significant design process needs to be undertaken to ensure the lights are providing the optimum lighting for residents and visitors, whilst balancing the environmental and efficiency requirements of modern infrastructure.
Our New Zealand electricity team, through our partners LDP Limited, have been recognised for their outstanding design efforts on the Dunedin City Council street lighting replacement project, winning several national honours as part of the 2022 IESANZ (Illumination Engineering Society Australia & New Zealand) Lighting Awards.
Our partner LDP took out the following awards:
- Award of Excellence: Lighting Design - Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand (RASNZ)
- Award of Commendation: Lighting Design - IES NZ
- Award of Excellence: Energy Efficiency - IES NZ

A collaborative process
Ventia contract manager Steve Walker explained that the awards were based off the design aspect of the project and there was a lot of collaboration between LDP and Ventia during the design phase.
"The design approach to this project from LDP was really innovative,' Steve said.
It ensured a balance between reliable and modern lighting whilst meeting the needs of energy efficient, environmentally friendly infrastructure, optimised for compliance with national lighting standards.
One aspect of the design process that Ventia was a key part of was the selection of the luminaires (electric light units). The selection of two very capable luminaires enabled lighting design that could be tailored to particular road sizes allowing for optimal outcomes.
"We are proud to not only be recognised for the expertise we added during the design, but we're also delighted that our team could execute on this vision through the operational phase of the project," Steve added.
