Men's violence against women is an ongoing epidemic in Australia and New Zealand and White Ribbon note that the COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation worse. Lockdowns and social distancing have not only created a spike in violence, but also reduced the ability of victims to seek help.
The White Ribbon Campaign is a year-round campaign that began in November 1991. It works to raise awareness of violence against women, encouraging men to support women's groups and raise awareness in schools and workplaces of violence against women, and to raise money for support programs.
White Ribbon highlights the need to change the attitudes and social norms that excuse or condone disrespect, sexual harassment and abuse. We all need to play our part - and we need men who know that they are a part of the solution to be equipped with the tools they need to make change in themselves, their communities and our society.
Be part of the change
At Ventia, we have implemented leave policies in both Australia and New Zealand that give our people access to up to 10 days paid leave per year for family and domestic violence. In Australia, this over and above the legislative requirement of five days leave.
General Manager P&C Rachel Dodds says the White Ribbon Campaign is a very worthy cause, and she's pleased to see the support it has across our business.
"Introducing the additional leave this year was a great step forward," Rachel says. "But we also help employees and their families across our business each year not just through the policies and leave entitlements but through our support programs and networks, like our Healthy Minds Champions and our employee assistance program."
Ventia's Healthy Minds Champion network consists of 120+ volunteers who are passionate about helping others who are struggling with their mental health.
If our people are facing challenges at work or at home and would like to talk to someone, Ventia's Healthy Minds Champions are here to help.
White Ribbon Day focus
This White Ribbon Day in Australia, focus is on the action men can take to end men's violence against women. The campaign is asking, 'How can men make change?" and challenging them, and all Australians, to Learn, Give and Take Action.
In New Zealand, we are calling on our communities to Shine a Light on Violence Prevention - Whiti te rama - and help share stories of change.
You can take the pledge in New Zealand here or become a White Ribbon Supporter in Australia by signing up here today.
