We love working with our people to help them be their best selves and reach their full potential.

There are many ways we can support our people to reach their goals, from mentoring to further education, to cross-sector job placements and more.

In our New Zealand business, one of our passionate people was keen to further his studies, and we were excited to help make that possible.

When Quantity Surveyor Eddie Qian showed a desire to complete his Master of Construction degree, he was encouraged to apply for education assistance through our twice-yearly program.

As a result of Eddie’s hard work and dedication he graduated with distinction, with no less than 8.25 out of 9, a fantastic achievement.

“At Ventia, we’re dedicated to fostering the growth and advancement of our team members,” says Omid Bassam, Eddie’s manager.

We provide various forms of support, including training opportunities, financial assistance for tuition fees, and encouragement for further development studies. Our aim is to enhance their experience and ensure their continuous growth and development.

In the two years Eddie has been at Ventia, he says he prioritises health and safety, stakeholder management and subcontractor management as integral parts of his job.

“I work on a wide range of projects, from facility management to track and beach works, and playground construction,” Eddie says. “The most rewarding aspect of my job is contributing to the beautification and improvement of our community.”

Through his degree, Eddie conducted a research project on the selection of sustainable construction materials, receiving an A+ on the final report. The research project involved collaboration with over 20 project managers from one of our clients Auckland Council, who provided valuable insights through a comprehensive questionnaire.

His program also included an in-depth study of dispute resolutions, procurement strategies and several global contracts such as NZS 3910, NZIA SCC, SA 2017 and the NZ Construction Contracts Act 2002.

Growing through the power of education

Gaining knowledge and expertise can further you in your role and in your career and at Ventia we believe in investing in our people's growth and development.

Eddie says “The knowledge gained from these courses has enhanced my understanding of Ventia's contractual roles and responsibilities, enabling us to minimise commercial risks. “Additionally, my expertise in sustainability allows me to incorporate sustainable materials into our projects, positively impacting both environmental and social outcomes.”

Eddie says he was encouraged to enhance his skills and by sponsoring half of his tuition fees, it enabled him to complete his degree.

There are also internal programs on offer to our employees, including various training courses and leadership programs that cater for people at all levels of our organisation.

Eddie has participated in several training opportunities at Ventia, including negotiation training in Perth, attending the NZIQS conference in Wellington, and access to numerous online training resources.

These experiences have enhanced my ability to deliver projects for our clients and approach my work with creativity and innovation.

Eddie could not have done this without the support of his friends and family and Omid his manager. Omid was with him every step of the way and at Ventia our people are at the heart of our success.

“I am grateful to my manager, Omid Bassam, who has been supportive throughout my academic journey. He participated in my pilot questionnaire and provided critical support for my sustainability research project. His guidance and assistance were instrumental in achieving my academic success.”
