Ventia's expertise sits at the intersection of renewable generation and energy networks, designing, building and commissioning the substations, transmission infrastructure, protection systems and high-voltage connections that allow energy projects to export power into the grid.

This capability has become increasingly important as demand grows to strengthen energy security and diversify generation sources. Ventia's work is helping customers build, connect and maintain the infrastructure needed to support a more reliable and sustainable energy future.

Kōwhai Park: Bringing renewable energy to Christchurch

Developed by the Contact Energy and Lightsource bp joint venture, Kōwhai Park is expected to generate around 275GWh of renewable electricity annually from approximately 300,000 solar panels, enough to power the equivalent of around 36,000 homes.

The project is a significant addition to New Zealand's renewable energy portfolio and a major milestone for Christchurch's emerging renewable energy precinct.

Ventia delivered the high-voltage infrastructure to connect the solar farm to the network, including two substations and 5.5 kilometres of 66kV cable. Beca provided design and engineering expertise as well as technical support throughout whilst Fulton Hogan delivered trenching for the 66kv cables. HRS Constructions also supported delivering civil works across the two new substations.

The project delivery highlighted the value of collaboration across the industry with combined capabilities in design, engineering, civil construction and energy infrastructure helping deliver the complex network connection required to support the renewable energy project.

Ventia General Manager Energy Networks and Renewables Craig MacDonald said that his team was proud to have played a role alongside partners in this critical renewable project.

Kōwhai Park demonstrates what can be achieved when industry partners bring their expertise together behind a shared goal.

As New Zealand continues to invest in renewable energy, Kōwhai Park highlights the value of industry collaboration in delivering the infrastructure needed to support a lower-carbon future.

At Ventia, we're proud to be helping connect the infrastructure that powers Australia and New Zealand's renewable energy future.

Whether you're developing a renewable energy project, expanding network capacity or planning critical grid infrastructure, Ventia can help.
